These are very interesting times right now. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is now a pandemic and there is increasing fear and concern, with stockpiling occurring as we start our lockdown 4-week period and isolate within our homes.

We are now being encouraged to practice ‘social distancing’. This is to avoid close contact – avoid shaking hands or hugging, to try and stop the spread of the virus which is spread via close face to face contact, or touching surfaces that have been contaminated by an infected person.

If there is a risk that you have been exposed to the virus, the government is advising self-isolation. It’s an effective precautionary measure to protect those around you – your family and friends from contracting the virus.

What this means is to stay at home and limit contact with people (other than those family members/companions you may have travelled with) for 14 days.

Whilst it works if you live alone, most of us live with loved ones that we don’t want to expose to the virus. The NZ government on their website say:

“If you are in a home where the others who live with you haven’t travelled or been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19, you should minimise close contact with them by avoiding situations where you have face-to-face contact closer than 2 metres for more than 15 minutes. The other household residents do not need to self-isolate provided these precautions are followed.

You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, pillows or other items with other people in your home. After using these items, you should wash them thoroughly with soap and water, place them in the dishwasher for cleaning or wash them in your washing machine”
