Resident Builder Peter Wolfkamp
I started my building career in 1987, and not long after began my radio career with Newstalk ZB.
These two different vocations have run alongside each other, jumping the tracks from one to the other over the years, and resulting in a career that now combines extensive experience in the building sector with a proven track record in broadcasting.
After many years working with Newstalk ZB, we are now delighted to have our own Resident Builder show on Sunday mornings from 6am to 9am. We discuss everything to do with building, renovating and home ownership during this show, as well as taking your calls on your DIY projects.
At the age of one, Peter picked up his tools for the first time and has never looked back. Decades later, Peter Wolfkamp LBP, NZTC, remains one of New Zealand’s most trusted voices in building, sharing his deep knowledge, practical skill, and lifelong passion for carpentry and construction.
On the tools
Peter’s portfolio spans historic Devonport villas, ultra modern townhouses, rustic country estates, and the restoration of an 1890 church. His experience also extends offshore, including a sabbatical spent working on a 16th century farmhouse in southern France. His professional development includes NZGBC Homestar Home Coach and Practitioner training, and he is a Licensed Building Practitioner. He has also completed introductory modules with the NZ Institute of Building Surveyors, earning a formal qualification and certificate in Residential Property Inspections.
On the air
Alongside his hands on work, Peter has built a significant broadcasting career. Over the past 25 years, he has hosted overnight talkback on Newstalk ZB, contributed regularly to Saturday afternoons with Tim Beveridge, and developed a loyal national following. In 2014, he launched Sunday Mornings with the Resident Builder on Newstalk ZB (6–9am), now the number one programme in its time slot and New Zealand’s leading DIY radio show, attracting more than 170,000 listeners each week. The show blends caller questions, practical advice, and expert insights from specialists across the industry. His radio work has also led to voice-over and commercial voicing opportunities.
On screen
Peter’s media presence extends to television, where he served as Site Foreman for The Block NZ for 10 seasons (2012–2022), overseeing teams, trades, and all compliance matters. Known on screen as “The Wolf,” he brings a rare combination of technical expertise, construction leadership, and editorial understanding to production teams. In 2016, he launched his own TV series, Creative Living on TV3, guiding homeowners through the process of transforming their properties into warm, efficient, future focused homes. In 2017, he co-presented the property series Slice of Paradise, helping New Zealanders navigate the search for their dream home.
Today
With extensive on-site experience, a passion for architecture, and a strong technical foundation, Peter connects effortlessly with audiences of all ages and skill levels — from first-time DIYers to industry professionals. His friendly, open, “bloke next door” style makes complex building concepts accessible, and his credibility ensures they are trusted. It’s no surprise that everyone loves “The Wolf.”
