I have been spending a bit of time in the garden recently as it bursts back into life.
While listening to the spring rain falling on the roof, there was also a quiet satisfaction knowing that I was collecting that rainwater and directing it into the Bailey SlimJim tank, which I had installed behind the garden shed at the beginning of the year.
The 1,000 litres of rainwater I have collected is ready to be used on the garden, as the days get longer, and the temperature warms up. Ensuring the hedges and shrubs we planted in autumn, thrive during their first summer as they depend on the rainwater plus, they need plenty of it.
I’m guessing that more experienced gardeners than a novice like me, have known for years that there are many benefits to using rainwater rather than mains supply water. The nitrates in rainwater are a natural source of nitrogen, critical for plant growth, and rainwater consists of the required amount of carbon, which helps to unlock the micro-nutrients present in the soil around the plants.
Given that we here in Auckland have just had water restrictions lifted, ensuring you are self-sufficient when it comes to watering the garden is both a necessity and socially responsible.
One of the advantages of the SlimJim tank, is that I was able to utilise a narrow strip of land behind the garden shed. At just 32 cm wide, the SlimJim fits into a space no other tank could. This space saving feature, is equally useful when locating the SlimJim on an existing pathway, meaning as much of the pathway as possible remains free to walk on.
Installing the SlimJim into a space that was of no use, was one of the best decisions we made, to ensure the newly planted garden we had installed would thrive and our investment would not be wilted away in the summer.
To give your garden the best possible growth this summer invest in a rainwater tank!
