Looking back, a few key events helped to shape my opinion around the usefulness of wearing safety footwear.

Many years ago, on a Saturday afternoon, while working casually in my shed wearing completely unsuitable footwear, I almost took a decent chunk out of my toe with a circular saw I was using.

Thereafter I have never worn open footwear while using power tools.

To be fair, I also recall that work boots were typically pretty uncomfortable back in the day. However, they are necessary when working in a building or on a work site. You must always protect yourself and your feet.

The first pair I ever had was almost 40 years ago. They seemed to be rock hard, not great for the feet, and not particularly flexible, and I certainly looked forward to taking them off at the end of the day.

By comparison, modern safety footwear, like the Apex Boots I choose to wear daily, are lighter, more flexible, and definitely more comfortable. I can wear them the entire working day, and my feet will be comfortable. Plus, most weekends, I will be wearing my safety boots, doing those endless jobs around the home. They provide both safety and comfort.

Another observation about today’s safety footwear is the range of boots designed with specific tasks in mind. If you plan on getting wet, there are waterproof boots, if you are standing on ladders a lot, then you can have boots with a reinforced midsole for greater underfoot stability and comfort on ladders, spades, towers and steps. Plus boots that protect your ankles. I’ve seen too many work site accidents. Once during the demolition of a bathroom, a tile flew off a wall and cut into the ankle. Protecting your feet is paramount. You only get one pair so do yourself a favour and be kind to your feet.
