The longer I work in the construction industry, the more I appreciate just how important training and professional associations really are. Over the years we’ve seen trade based groups emerge for roofers, tilers, waterproofers and more, alongside the long standing building associations that have supported the sector for decades.
That’s why the establishment of the Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) is such a significant step forward. It brings structure, standards, and a clear commitment to professionalism. The arrival of SPASA Training is central to that progress — delivering qualifications and professional development designed to strengthen skills and build capability across the industry.
Last year, SPASA supported the creation of a new qualification for pool building in New Zealand. This year, SPASA Training, in partnership with Vertical Horizonz, will bring the New Zealand Certificate in Swimming Pool Building (Level 4) to life. It’s a genuine pathway for people in the industry to develop real skills and practical know how. This qualification is a key part of SPASA’s mission to build a more skilled, professional, and sustainable pool and spa sector for New Zealand.
New Zealand’s climate and topography can be challenging, so knowing what you’re doing when building a pool is essential. SPASA has already led the development of the New Zealand Standard for fibreglass pool manufacturing and installation, which is now in place. Work is underway on a similar standard for concrete pools — one that reflects the unique building conditions we face here.
If you’re planning a pool or spa project, choosing the right professional makes all the difference. Look for the SPASA logo to ensure you’re partnering with a qualified expert who works to strict industry standards.
